How the space words fit each size
64 of the 65 space words fit the 11 × 11 easy grid. CONSTELLATION is too long for it, so it only turns up on the 15 × 15 medium and 19 × 19 hard grids.
18 words have five letters or fewer, SUN, LYRA and MARS among them, and those are the first ones young solvers spot. The longest, CONSTELLATION, OBSERVATORY and BETELGEUSE, are the last to be found.
A way to use the space word search
When the sheet is finished, ask which circled words are stars, which are planets and which are machines. Sorting the list into three columns turns a puzzle into a short astronomy lesson.
