How the animals words fit each size
Every one of the 68 animals words is short enough for the 11 × 11 easy grid, so easy, medium (15 × 15) and hard (19 × 19) all draw on the full list.
36 words have five letters or fewer, CAT, COW and DOG among them, and those are the first ones young solvers spot. The longest, CHIMPANZEE, BUTTERFLY and CROCODILE, are the last to be found.
A way to use the animals word search
Ask children to tick each word they find under farm, pet or wild (PIG, HAMSTER, LEOPARD), then count which column ended up longest.
