How to Choose KDP Categories: A Step-by-Step Method
A repeatable method for choosing your three KDP categories by relevance, buyer fit and competition, with a worked example and a ve…
Pick 8.5 x 8.5 in. or 8 x 10 in. for a picture book, and 8.5 x 11 in. for activity and coloring books. All three count as large trim on KDP, so the printing fee matches whichever you choose.
Choosing KDP trim sizes for children's books is a production decision before it is a creative one. The trim size decides how big your art can run, how much a copy costs to print, and how the finished book feels in a small hand.
Amazon KDP lists sixteen paperback sizes, but only a handful suit young readers. Sizes are in inches, width by height, and printing categories come from KDP's own help pages (checked September 2026).
| Book type | Best trim size | KDP category | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Picture book, square | 8.5 x 8.5 | Large trim | Full-page scenes, no wasted paper, easy to lay out spreads |
| Picture book, portrait | 8 x 10 | Large trim | Tall characters and vertical scenes; closest to a traditional trade picture book |
| Small picture book or early reader | 6 x 9 | Regular trim | Cheapest color printing; fits small hands |
| Activity book (mazes, dot-to-dots, puzzles) | 8.5 x 11 | Large trim | Room for a grid and answer space; kids write in it |
| Coloring book | 8.5 x 11 or 8.5 x 8.5 | Large trim | Big open shapes for crayons; square suits toddlers |
| Travel activity book | 5.5 x 8.5 | Regular trim | Fits a backpack or car seat pocket |
This is KDP's full paperback list as read on its trim-size help page in September 2026. Regular trim means up to 6.12 in. wide and 9 in. tall; anything larger is large trim and uses the higher fee table. Pixel sizes are the page with bleed (width plus 0.125 in., height plus 0.25 in.) at 300 DPI, rounded up.
| Trim size (in.) | Category | Black ink pages | Premium color pages | Standard color pages | Page with bleed, px at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 x 8 | Regular | 24 to 828 | 24 to 828 | 72 to 600 | 1,538 x 2,475 |
| 5.06 x 7.81 | Regular | 24 to 828 | 24 to 828 | 72 to 600 | 1,556 x 2,418 |
| 5.25 x 8 | Regular | 24 to 828 | 24 to 828 | 72 to 600 | 1,613 x 2,475 |
| 5.5 x 8.5 | Regular | 24 to 828 | 24 to 828 | 72 to 600 | 1,688 x 2,625 |
| 6 x 9 | Regular | 24 to 828 | 24 to 828 | 72 to 600 | 1,838 x 2,775 |
| 6.14 x 9.21 | Large | 24 to 828 | 24 to 828 | 72 to 600 | 1,880 x 2,838 |
| 6.69 x 9.61 | Large | 24 to 828 | 24 to 828 | 72 to 600 | 2,045 x 2,958 |
| 7 x 10 | Large | 24 to 828 | 24 to 828 | 72 to 600 | 2,138 x 3,075 |
| 7.44 x 9.69 | Large | 24 to 828 | 24 to 828 | 72 to 600 | 2,270 x 2,982 |
| 7.5 x 9.25 | Large | 24 to 828 | 24 to 828 | 72 to 600 | 2,288 x 2,850 |
| 8 x 10 | Large | 24 to 828 | 24 to 828 | 72 to 600 | 2,438 x 3,075 |
| 8.25 x 6 (landscape) | Large | 24 to 800 | 24 to 800 | 72 to 600 | 2,513 x 1,875 |
| 8.25 x 8.25 | Large | 24 to 800 | 24 to 800 | 72 to 600 | 2,513 x 2,550 |
| 8.5 x 8.5 | Large | 24 to 590 | 24 to 590 | 72 to 600 | 2,588 x 2,625 |
| 8.5 x 11 | Large | 24 to 590 | 24 to 590 | 72 to 600 | 2,588 x 3,375 |
| 8.27 x 11.69 | Large | 24 to 780 | 24 to 590 | Not offered | 2,519 x 3,582 |
Two details matter here. Standard color starts at 72 pages at every size that offers it (8.27 x 11.69 does not), so a 32-page picture book cannot use it and must be printed in premium color. The 8.5 x 8.5 and 8.5 x 11 sizes cap at 590 pages in both black ink and premium color, far above any children’s book. KDP adds and retires sizes, so check the live dropdown before you commit.
Picture books are image-first. A square page lets an illustrator compose a scene without favoring width or height, which is why 8.5 x 8.5 is widely used for self-published picture books, alongside 8 x 10.
Best for scenes that spread across two pages, animals and round characters. Same fee category as 8 x 10, so choose on art, not price.
Suits tall subjects such as giraffes, trees, rockets and standing figures. Text can sit in a strip above or below the art.
A near-square that KDP also lists as large trim. The page with bleed is 8.375 x 8.5 in. (2,513 x 2,550 px). It is a quarter inch smaller in each direction than 8.5 x 8.5 (about 0.125 in. per side), and the printing fee does not change.
Slimmer portrait options. Both are large trim on KDP, so they cost the same as 8 x 10 while giving less canvas.
KDP's landscape choices are limited. As of September 2026 the paperback list has 8.25 x 6 as its only wide format, with no large landscape such as 10 x 8 or 11 x 8.5. If you want a wide picture book, check the trim-size dropdown before you commit an illustrator to the layout.
The traditional page count for a picture book is 32 pages, and it sits comfortably inside KDP's paperback minimum of 24 pages. Plan the story around spreads, not single pages, since the gutter cuts across the middle of every open spread.
Activity books are used, not just looked at. A child writes in the grid, draws a path through a maze, or joins numbered dots. That behavior pushes the size choice toward a full letter-size page.
At 8.5 x 11 in. a 15 x 15 maze gets a cell wide enough for a pencil line, and a word search fits letters a six-year-old can read. Drop to 6 x 9 and the same maze shrinks or loses cells. Smaller sizes still have a place: 5.5 x 8.5 suits road trips, and 6 x 9 works when each page carries one large puzzle. Both print as regular trim.
If you build puzzle pages yourself, two free generators cover the most common children's activity types: the connect-the-dots generator for dot-to-dot pages and the multiplication worksheet generator for math practice. For mazes, the guide to a free maze generator explains what to look for in output quality. Size your page image to the trim you chose, not the other way around.
Coloring books split into two audiences. Toddlers and preschoolers scribble across big, simple shapes, while older children and adults want fine detail. The audience decides the size.
Interior ink is the second choice. A coloring book with black line art is a black-ink book, even if the cover is in color. Black-and-white interiors cost far less to print than color ones (see the fee table below).
Keep a blank or lightly patterned page behind each drawing if children use markers. Ink can bleed through thin paper, and a spare page protects the picture on the other side.
Bleed is the extra artwork that runs past the trim line so no white edge shows after cutting. If any picture, tint or color background touches the edge of the page, the file needs bleed. Nearly every picture book does.
KDP's rule, from its Set Trim Size, Bleed, and Margins page (checked September 2026): add 0.125 in. to the width and 0.25 in. to the height. Your page width becomes trim width plus 0.125 in., and your page height becomes trim height plus two times 0.125 in. Top, bottom and outside margins must be at least 0.375 in. for books with bleed, or 0.25 in. without. Bleed does not change the printing fee.
For example, an 8.5 x 8.5 in. book needs 8.625 x 8.75 in. pages, which is 2,588 x 2,625 px at 300 DPI; the chart above gives the pixel size for every other trim.
The inside margin, the gutter, depends on page count. For books of 24 to 150 pages it is 0.375 in. minimum, rising to 0.5 in. for 151 to 300 pages. A 32-page picture book sits in the smallest band, but that is a floor, not a design target. Keep faces, hands and text at least half an inch from the center fold so nothing is lost in the binding curve.
The cover is one flat file: back cover, spine and front cover side by side. Its width is two times the trim width, plus the spine width, plus 0.25 in. of bleed, and its height is the trim height plus 0.25 in. Spine width changes with page count and paper, so take it from KDP's cover calculator rather than calculating by hand.
Paper and spine follow the ink choice. KDP's setup screen offers white paper for color interiors and cream as a black-ink option, so a color picture book prints on white stock. Spine text prints only on books with more than 79 pages, so a 32-page picture book has a blank spine; put the title on the front and back covers.
KDP divides trim sizes into regular and large. A book wider than 6.12 in. or taller than 9 in. is large trim, and it uses a higher fee table. Cost depends on that category, not on the exact dimensions inside it, so 8.5 x 8.5, 8 x 10 and 8.5 x 11 all cost the same for the same page count and ink.
The fee formulas below are for the Amazon.com marketplace as of September 2026, read live on KDP's paperback printing-cost help page. Fees vary by marketplace and change, so confirm the numbers there before you set a price.
| Ink and page range | Regular trim | Large trim |
|---|---|---|
| Black ink, 24 to 110 pages | $2.30 per book | $2.84 per book |
| Black ink, above 110 up to 828 pages | $1.00 + $0.012 per page | $1.00 + $0.017 per page |
| Standard color, 72 to 600 pages | $1.00 + $0.0255 per page | $1.00 + $0.0402 per page |
| Premium color, 24 to 40 pages | $3.60 per book | $4.20 per book |
| Premium color, 42 to 828 pages | $1.00 + $0.065 per page | $1.00 + $0.08 per page |
KDP prints the black-ink bands as 24 to 110 and 110 to 828, so 110 appears in both; price a book at exactly 110 pages in KDP's own calculator. The page ceilings also vary by trim size, so check the calculator near any band edge.
Applied to typical children's books, the formulas give these per-copy costs.
| Book | Working | Printing cost |
|---|---|---|
| 32-page picture book, 6 x 9, premium color | flat fee, regular trim | $3.60 |
| 32-page picture book, 8.5 x 8.5, premium color | flat fee, large trim | $4.20 |
| 48-page picture book, 8.5 x 8.5, premium color | 1.00 + (0.08 x 48) | $4.84 |
| 64-page picture book, 8.5 x 8.5, premium color | 1.00 + (0.08 x 64) | $6.12 |
| 100-page activity book, 8.5 x 11, standard color | 1.00 + (0.0402 x 100) | $5.02 |
| 100-page activity book, 8.5 x 11, black ink | flat fee, large trim | $2.84 |
| 120-page coloring book, 8.5 x 11, black ink | 1.00 + (0.017 x 120) | $3.04 |
The numbers point two ways. A black-and-white interior is far cheaper than color: the 100-page activity book costs $2.84 in black ink and $5.02 in standard color. And large trim adds $0.60 to a short premium-color book ($4.20 against $3.60), which matters on a low-priced title, so do not pick large trim by reflex.
The printing-cost calculator on Octozia's free KDP calculators page models regular trim only. For any large-trim book, use the fee table on KDP's paperback printing-cost help page (topic G201834340) and check it against the calculator in your KDP account.
Say you illustrate a 32-page rhyming story about a fox who cannot sleep, and you plan to list it at $12.99. The 60% royalty base for Amazon marketplaces is list price times 0.60, minus printing cost. KDP has adjusted its royalty bands before, so check the current rate on KDP's royalty help page and redo the math with it.
The 6 x 9 version earns about 60 cents more per copy at the same price, but the art shrinks from 8.5 x 8.5 to 6 x 9. For a first book with detailed scenes, the extra canvas usually matters more than 60 cents. For a simple board-style story with one character per page, the smaller size makes sense.
Hand your illustrator the page size before they start: 8.625 x 8.75 in. per page (2,588 x 2,625 px at 300 DPI) for the 8.5 x 8.5 version.
Draw the busiest scene on paper at 8.5 x 8.5, 8 x 10 and 6 x 9. See which size gives each subject room, and settle on one before any final art.
On your KDP Bookshelf choose Create, then Paperback. On the Paperback Content tab, open Print Options and select the interior and paper type: premium color for a short color book, black and white for line art.
Still under Print Options, click Trim Size and pick your size from the dropdown, for example 8.5 x 8.5 in. Check the fee for regular against large trim before you lock a price.
Under Bleed Settings, choose "Bleed (PDF only)" if art touches the edge. Create pages at the bleed size from the chart, for example 8.625 x 8.75 in. for 8.5 x 8.5, keep text 0.5 in. inside the trim and the gutter, and export a PDF at 300 DPI.
Upload the manuscript and cover, then launch KDP's Previewer to check that nothing crosses the margin guides. Then order a printed proof and confirm faces are not lost in the gutter and colors match your screen.
The guide to KDP interior templates covers setting up a correct file for a paperback.
Many parents buy picture books as hardcover gifts, so the question comes up often. As of September 2026, the list on KDP's hardcover trim size help page includes 5.5 x 8.5, 6 x 9, 6.14 x 9.21, 7 x 10 and 8.25 x 11. It does not include 8.5 x 8.5. A square hardcover on KDP therefore may not be available at the size most picture books use.
If hardcover is central to the plan, compare the current size lists on both platforms, starting with KDP versus IngramSpark. Size lists change, so verify before you design.
Octozia's KDP Creator makes activity book interiors only, not picture books. It generates Sudoku, Word Search, Maze, Math and Number Fill puzzles at 300 DPI, in 5 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5, 6 x 9 and 8.5 x 11 trim sizes.
The output is a ZIP of numbered PNG page images plus a manifest file. It does not export a finished PDF, so you assemble the pages into your interior PDF yourself in a layout tool. Puzzle and solution pages come as separate images, and filenames keep each pair matched. Margins are the app's own 0.625 in. setting, not a KDP requirement.
Be aware of the limits. There is no 8.5 x 8.5 option, so a square puzzle book needs another tool. By default, a trial account with a card can generate 3 books and 60 pages per day, so a 100-page book needs a paid plan. Paid KDP Creator plans start at $9.99 per month as of September 2026; check the pricing page for the current figure.
8.5 x 8.5 in. square and 8 x 10 in. portrait are the sizes most often chosen for picture books; Amazon publishes no ranking, so treat that as common practice rather than a statistic. Both are large trim on KDP, so printing cost is identical for the same page count and ink. Choose square for two-page scenes, portrait for tall subjects.
Traditional picture books run 32 pages, and KDP's paperback minimum is 24. In premium color, books of 24 to 40 pages carry a flat printing fee. Standard color starts at 72 pages, so a short picture book needs premium color.
Neither. KDP prices by category, and both are large trim, so a 32-page premium-color copy costs $4.20 at either size as of September 2026. Only moving to regular trim, such as 6 x 9, lowers the fee. Confirm on KDP's printing-cost page.
8.5 x 11 in. is the standard choice for coloring books, with 8.5 x 8.5 for toddlers who need bigger shapes. A black-ink interior costs $2.84 per copy for 24 to 110 pages in large trim, as of September 2026.
Yes, if any art, tint or background reaches the page edge. KDP asks you to add 0.125 in. to the width and 0.25 in. to the height. An 8.5 x 8.5 in. book becomes 8.625 x 8.75 in. per page. Without edge-to-edge art, you can skip bleed.
KDP Creator turns puzzle settings into 300-DPI page images for 5 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5, 6 x 9 and 8.5 x 11 books; 3-day trial, card required.
