Printable Worksheet Generator: Free Tools for Math, Spelling, Handwriting, Tracing and Puzzles

Five jobs hide behind one search: math drills, spelling, handwriting, name tracing and puzzle pages. No single tool does all five well, so here is the free generator that fits each, what its license lets you sell, and how loose pages become a book Amazon will print.

Which Worksheet Generator Fits Which Job

Math drills, spelling practice, handwriting lines, name tracing and puzzle pages come out of five different kinds of tool. A classroom needs only the free web makers below; selling the pages narrows the field, because most license their output for classroom use only.

Worksheet typeWhat you actually setFree tool that does it wellCan you sell the output?
Math drillsOperation, operand range, regrouping, problems per pageMath-Aids.com, WorksheetWorks.comNo — personal and classroom use only in their terms
Spelling practiceA list of 10–20 words and the exercise: scramble, cloze, copy, alphabetizeTheTeachersCorner.net, several exercises from one listClassroom use as published — read their terms yourself before selling (checked Sept 2026)
Handwriting and cursiveLetter style, rule height, dashed midline, print vs joined scriptWorksheetWorks.com's handwriting maker: you type the textNo — and the output carries a site footer
Name tracingOne name, repeat count, line height, arrows on or offThe same maker, name typed as the textNo — a licensed tracing font plus a layout tool gets you there
Puzzle pages: sudoku, word search, maze, number fillGrid size, difficulty, puzzles per page, solutions on or offOne-off web generators, usually one puzzle per clickVaries, and most say nothing — treat silence as a refusal, not permission

Cut-and-paste and matching sheets are the gap: no generator emits the cut strip plus the target grid, so build those from a Word or Canva template.

What Comes Out of a Worksheet Generator

Math drills. Twenty problems suit grades 1 and 2. A timed mad minute for grades 3–5 wants 40–50, but columnar borrowing needs about two inches of vertical room per row: at 0.5 in classroom margins on Letter that is five rows, so a five-column grid holds 25 stacked sums, not 50. Inside KDP Creator's 0.625 in margin and burned-in header it is four rows.

The app is fixed at 20 problems a page at every trim, with no problems-per-page control, and sets them inline with a ruled answer slot rather than stacked — so on 8.5 × 11 those 20 fill about half the content height: fine for grade 1, too light for a timed drill.

Spelling practice. The word list is the asset, not the page: good makers spin one list of 10–20 words into a week of exercises.

Handwriting and tracing. Rule height decides whether a page is usable: roughly 1 inch for preschool, 5/8 inch around grade 1, 1/2 inch in grade 2, 3/8 inch by grade 3, with a solid top and baseline and a dashed midline.

Cursive Pages Follow Different Rules From Print

Cursive normally starts around grade 3, so the sheet targets a hand that already writes small: the 3/8 inch rule, not the 5/8 inch primary one. Joins are what free makers get wrong — many set each glyph in isolation, so "ball" prints as four loops with gaps. Test any generator on "or" or "ba".

Zaner-Bloser and D'Nealian were live US registrations when checked in September 2026 at tmsearch.uspto.gov, so describe the shapes on a cover rather than naming a style. Not legal advice.

How to Judge Print Resolution on a PNG and on a PDF

With PNG or JPG, pixel count settles it: 8.5 × 11 at 300 DPI must be 2550 × 3300 px, and anything smaller was rendered at 96 to 150 DPI, where dashed tracing lines print fuzzy. A vector PDF has no pixel count, so zoom a dashed line to 400 percent: stair-stepping means a wrapped image. KDP Creator's pages are raster at 300 DPI — they pass the pixel test, not a vector-only one.

Where Free Worksheet Generators Stop

Free makers are built for a teacher who needs one page before period three. Three gaps appear the moment you need a hundred pages that belong together.

  • Page size. Letter maps to KDP's 8.5 × 11 and A4 to its 8.27 × 11.69 in — confirm the list on KDP's trim-size help page — but no free generator emits 6 × 9 or 5.5 × 8.5. A free layout tool such as Canva sets any trim; it just will not generate the drills.
  • Answer keys. Math makers often produce one; spelling and handwriting makers rarely do, and typing a key for 1,100 sums is where the project dies. A site URL in the footer is the other product-killer.
  • Volume. One page per click makes a 112-page interior 112 downloads plus a merge — two hours of clicking is the real price of a free tool.

AI Worksheet Generators: Strong on Words, Weak on Arithmetic

MagicSchool, Diffit, Canva's AI features and plain ChatGPT write worksheet content well — passage questions, themed vocabulary, a text rewritten for grade 3. Ask any of them for 400 subtraction problems and a key, though, and some answers will be wrong. A seeded generator derives the key from the numbers that made the problem, so the two cannot disagree.

Amazon has asked publishers to disclose AI-generated text, images and translations since September 2023. A randomized drill generator is algorithmic rather than generative, but read KDP's definition before answering the form (September 2026).

Can You Sell What a Worksheet Generator Makes?

These rows summarize the published terms of the six operators most sellers reach for, last checked September 2026. TheTeachersCorner and the handwriting maker named earlier are not among them — read their terms before selling that output. A membership buys more downloads, not more rights. Not legal advice.

That clause is broad, but it predates the page generator, and "reports, data, and analytics" reads as wording drafted for research output — so a catalog worth building is worth one email to support. One manifest line gets misread as a second restriction: the warning against republishing the archive as-is is duplicate-detection advice, not a license term.

Fonts deserve a real check. A name-tracing book is nothing but font output, and many "free" dotted fonts are personal-use only. Buy a face with an explicit print-on-demand license, keep the receipt, and budget for Canva Pro, which uploading one takes.

Build a Worksheet Book for KDP, Step by Step

Worked example: 55 Days of Subtraction Facts to 20, 8.5 × 11, built in KDP Creator on subtraction at easy difficulty. Fifty-five worksheets is eleven school weeks of daily practice; with their solutions and the ZIP's two front pages that prints as 112 pages. What that choice costs against a 50-worksheet build is worked out below.

1

Pick one skill, and learn what the generator will not expose

"Two-digit subtraction" outranks "Grade 2 math" because parents search the skill their child is stuck on. Then check the tool can deliver it: the math generator gives you an operation and one of three difficulty bands — no regrouping toggle, no operand-range field, 20 problems a page, and no way to switch solution pages off, which is why the printed count doubles.

2

Change three defaults before you touch the slider

The app opens on mixed operation, medium difficulty, 6 × 9 trim and 50 worksheets, so three controls move before the page slider. Medium widens operands to 10–100 but also turns about 15 percent of every page into three-operand a ± b × c problems, whatever operation you picked, and the minus form has no floor: a grade-2 page can print −1,490 as an answer. Hard lifts that share to 40 percent and the operands to 50–999, putting its floor past −24,000. Easy is the only band with no multi-step injection.

3

Know how shallow the easy pool is

Easy subtraction draws the first number from 1–20 and the second from 1 to that number: 210 distinct questions in all. Pages are deduplicated against themselves but not against each other, so a 55-worksheet book draws 1,100 problems from those 210 and repeats each about five times. A facts-fluency book wants that, but it is not 1,100 unique problems and must not be sold as such.

4

Set margins, then read the slider correctly

Choose 8.5 × 11, no bleed. Amazon's no-bleed minimums run about 0.25 in on outside edges plus a gutter that grows with page count, roughly 0.375 in to 150 pages — verify in KDP's manuscript guidelines. The app writes its own symmetric 0.625 in margin, documented in its code as safe to about 300 pages, which on a 112-page book already absorbs that gutter. MANIFEST.txt still tells you, unconditionally, to add a gutter for your final page count — the archive never adds one.

The slider labelled "Pages" counts worksheets, moving in fives from 10, and every step adds a puzzle page and a solution page — so 55 is 112 printed pages.

5

Keep every puzzle paired with its key

Files are named 003-p001-puzzle.png and 004-p001-solution.png, so pairing survives reordering when you sort by filename. Drills carry a plain footer page number and keys the same number with an S in front, so moving the solutions to the back needs no renumbering. Headers are burned in — "Worksheet 12 — Math (easy)" — so the difficulty band prints on 55 of these 112 pages with no way to remove it, so pick the band you want on the cover.

Front matter means one extra sheet, not three: the ZIP ships a title and a copyright page. White paper runs about 0.002252 in per page, so 112 pages is a 0.25 in spine — confirm it in KDP's cover calculator.

Turning Loose Pages Into One Interior File

Most first books stall here, and tool comparisons skip it. Whatever generator you used, you hold a pile of single pages and owe KDP one PDF at the exact trim.

The KDP Creator download is explicit about it: a ZIP of numbered 300-DPI PNGs plus a MANIFEST.txt carrying the seed, settings and per-puzzle fingerprints, and no PDF. Its page_count counts worksheets, matching the slider rather than the printed book — 55 here.

The Word Route, in Practice

  1. New document, Layout > Size > More Paper Sizes, set 8.5 in by 11 in, then set all four margins to 0 and choose "Ignore" when Word warns about the printable area. Each generated page carries its own margin, so a Word margin on top shifts the artwork.
  2. Insert > Pictures three times: the two front-matter files, then every *-puzzle.png sorted by filename, then every *-solution.png. Do not keep the ZIP's native order: it prints each answer on the back of its own drill, so a child turning the page meets the key before the next problem.
  3. Each PNG is 2550 × 3300 px with no embedded DPI tag, so Word falls back to 96 DPI, reads a page as 26.56 × 34.38 in and scales it to the text area you left. Zero margins land on 8.5 × 11; Word's default 1-inch margins land on 6.5 × 8.41 and print a white border. Do not trust the auto-fit: select every image, open Picture Format > Size and set 8.5 in by 11 in with "Relative to original picture size" off.
  4. Set the body paragraph to single spacing with spacing before and after at 0, or an 11-inch image plus its paragraph mark spills to a second sheet and 112 pages become 224. Acrobat's "Combine Files", Affinity Publisher and IrfanView batch the job instead.
  5. Save As PDF at print quality — "Standard (publishing online and printing)" on Windows, "Best for printing" on Mac, never "Minimum size", which downsamples. Line art compresses well, so a 112-page interior lands under 100 MB, far inside KDP's 650 MB ceiling (September 2026).
  6. Confirm the page count matches the image count — a stray blank page at the end is the usual mistake — then check a rule line at actual size in KDP's previewer.

Where each one wins. A single classroom page tomorrow morning is the free makers' job. KDP Creator has no spelling, handwriting or name-tracing generator, and its math settings are cruder than Math-Aids; Canva plus a licensed tracing font is the build there.

Math and puzzle workbooks at more than a title a month are where a seeded generator repays its price, in the key-matching step. Book Bolt's finished PDF justifies its higher tier if you would rather not assemble pages — a trade the Book Bolt alternatives comparison covers.

What a Worksheet Book Earns Per Copy

Two Amazon tables decide this and both have a step in them. KDP prices 8.5 × 11 as large trim and 6 × 9 as regular, splitting at 6.12 in wide or 9 in high. Rows below are US black-ink, white-paper, large-trim figures as of September 2026 — confirm them on KDP's printing-cost page.

Page count (8.5 × 11, black ink, US)How the cost is builtPrinting cost
24–110 pagesFixed cost only, page count ignored$2.84
111 pages$1.00 + (111 × $0.017)$2.89 — first count above the flat fee
112 pages$1.00 + (112 × $0.017)$2.90
130 pages$1.00 + (130 × $0.017)$3.21
200 pages$1.00 + (200 × $0.017)$4.40

Inside the flat band page count is free: a 40-page book and a 110-page book both print at $2.84, so a thin worksheet book gives away value it has already paid for. Fill the band. Past it the meter restarts at a $1.00 fixed cost plus 1.7 cents a page, and the curve never dips back under the flat fee — 111 pages already costs five cents more than 110.

Printed pages run two per worksheet plus the ZIP's two front-matter sheets, and the slider moves in fives, so 50 worksheets is 102 printed pages: the last stop inside the flat band. The 55-worksheet build in the example prints 112 pages and costs six cents more. Six cents for eleven weeks instead of ten is cheap — it is simply no longer free, which is the trade every extra slider stop makes from here on.

The Price Band Moves the Royalty Five Times More Than the Page Count

Amazon pays 50 percent of list price minus printing cost at or below $9.98 on Amazon.com, and 60 percent from $9.99 up; Expanded Distribution is a flat 40 percent in either band. The formula is royalty = (rate × list price) − printing cost, so crossing $9.99 changes the rate itself, not just the total. Check the current thresholds on KDP's royalty help page before you price.

BuildList $6.99 (50% band)List $9.99 (60% band)
50 worksheets — 102 pages, prints $2.84$0.66$3.15
55 worksheets — 112 pages, prints $2.90$0.59$3.09

Ten extra pages cost six cents of royalty. Three dollars of list price add about $2.50, close to five times the take, because $6.99 is paid at half and $9.99 at three fifths. Price is the lever; page count is rounding. A $6.99 worksheet book barely pays for itself at these numbers, and the floor underneath is real — minimum list price is printing cost divided by royalty rate, so $2.84 ÷ 0.50 puts it at $5.68.

Regular trim has the same two-part shape at lower numbers: $2.30 flat to 110 pages, then $1.00 plus $0.012 a page (US, September 2026). Run your own trim and page count through the printing-cost calculator, which carries both trim classes, the 110-page step and the 50/60 royalty bands.

Free Worksheet Generators for Teachers and Preschool

When nothing is being sold, licensing stops mattering and the free makers are enough. A routine that holds across a term: paste Monday's word list into a scramble maker, a match-up maker and a cloze maker in one sitting, then print the week. Preschool needs little beyond tracing makers, counting pages and one-step matching at 1 inch rules. For math drills specifically, Octozia’s own free multiplication worksheet generator covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and mixed problems with an answer-key toggle and print/PDF export — no account needed.

FAQ

Can I sell worksheets made with a free worksheet generator?

Usually not. WorksheetWorks, Math-Aids and Education.com restrict output to personal and classroom use in their published terms, last checked September 2026, and several print a site URL in the footer. Sell only what a tool's terms grant commercial rights to, and keep a dated copy.

Is there a free AI worksheet generator for teachers?

Several have free tiers, MagicSchool and Diffit among them, and they write questions, passages and vocabulary lists well at a chosen reading level. They are unreliable for computed content: an AI-written arithmetic key carries errors you can only find line by line. Use them for wording, not numbers.

What trim size should a printable worksheet book be?

8.5 × 11 for anything a child writes on: it matches Letter paper and leaves room for large handwriting, while 8.5 × 8.5 suits preschool tracing. Avoid 6 × 9 for written answers even at the cheaper regular-trim rate — an answer box too small to write in makes a book unusable.

Do worksheet books need answer keys?

For math, spelling and puzzles, yes — parents and teachers mark the work. A key that does not match its worksheet is the one error a buyer cannot work around, so spot-check three random pairs against their filenames before uploading. Tracing books need none.

Is a worksheet generator different from a worksheet maker or creator?

In practice generator, maker and creator are interchangeable. Where a difference exists, a generator randomizes content — new numbers or a new grid every run — while a maker is a template you fill with your own words. For publishing, the output license matters, not the label.
