Free Word Scramble Generator

Building your puzzle…

Free and unlimited, no account. Every puzzle is built in your browser from the 67-word puzzle list, so the same page gives a different sheet each time you press New puzzle.

The puzzle above is a working word scramble: press New puzzle for a fresh set, Answers to reveal the originals, Print for a clean sheet, or PNG to save the image. It runs entirely in your browser — free, unlimited, no account.

Below is what the button doesn't explain: how a word actually gets scrambled without silently handing you the answer, which difficulty fits who, and how to get it onto paper cleanly.

How a word gets scrambled without cheating

Scrambling a word is just shuffling its letters, but a naive shuffle can hand back the exact same order it started with — more often than you'd think on short words, since a 4-letter word only has 24 possible arrangements. The generator shuffles, checks whether the result matches the original word, and reshuffles if it does, up to twenty tries. If none of those twenty differ from the original — only realistic on a very short or repetitive word — it stops checking and uses whatever the next shuffle produces, rather than looping forever.

The three difficulty levels

LevelWordsLetters
Easy153–6
Medium185–9
Hard207–12

The difference between levels is entirely word length and count — there's no separate "harder" logic beyond that. Longer words have more possible letter arrangements, which is what actually makes a scramble harder to read: a 4-letter word has 24 possible orderings, but an 8-letter word has over 40,000. Easy suits a first pass with a child; hard is where the letter count alone stops being a shortcut and you're working from the word's shape and any repeated letters.

Printing it well

Print sends the numbered list to one sheet with the size picker and buttons hidden. Print once with Answers off, then switch Answers on and print again — that order gives you a real puzzle sheet and a separate key, rather than one sheet with the answers already showing. The PNG download lays the same list out in one or two columns depending on how many words are in it, rendered at three times screen size so the letters stay sharp when printed.

Using this in a book you sell

Puzzles generated here are yours to use, including in something you publish and sell. This page gives you one themed set at a time, sized to sit inside an article — not a full book's worth of puzzles at a fixed trim with paired answer pages. KDP Creator builds word-scramble interiors at KDP trim sizes alongside six other puzzle types and outputs a ZIP of numbered 300-DPI PNG pages plus a MANIFEST.txt — not a finished PDF, so you still assemble the interior yourself. Check the economics first on the KDP royalty calculator.

For a themed word list instead of the general one above — Christmas, Animals, Halloween and 60-plus more, each pulling from its own word bank — the full library is at /printables.

FAQ

Do I need an account?

No. The generator and the printables library are free with no sign-up. Sign-up only comes into play once you step into one of the paid tools.

Could a scramble accidentally show the real word?

The generator shuffles a word's letters, checks the result against the original, and reshuffles if it matches — up to twenty attempts. After twenty tries it stops checking and uses whatever the next shuffle produces, so on an extremely short or repetitive word there's a small theoretical chance the scramble reads close to the original. In practice this is a non-issue for real dictionary words, which almost always have enough distinct letters to shuffle into something different well within twenty tries.

Can I sell puzzles made with this?

Yes, every puzzle generated here is yours to use, including in a book you sell. Building a full book by hand, one scramble at a time, is slow — that's what KDP Creator exists for — but nothing stops you doing it manually.

Is every puzzle different?

Yes. Each press of New puzzle draws a fresh random selection and a fresh shuffle, so pressing it repeatedly gives different word sets and different scrambles each time.
