ACX changed the deal. There is a deadline.
Audible opened enrolment in a new royalty model on 26 May 2026, and says the legacy model is discontinued by the end of 2026. Every existing title has to be enrolled or withdrawn from Audible and ACX before 31 December 2026. New titles go into the new model automatically.
The headline is good news. The rate went up in both lanes:

The catch is that the rate is now applied to a different thing, which is the part worth understanding before you assume a 25% pay rise.
What the rate is applied to now
Under the legacy model you were paid a percentage of a sale. Under the new one Audible takes each listener’s Member Value — their plan price after taxes and fees, plus any extra credits they bought that month — and splits it across every title that listener engaged with, weighted by each title’s a la carte price. Your rate then applies to your slice of that pool.
Three consequences follow, and they cut in different directions:
- You now earn from listening that used to pay nothing. ACX says creators earn across plan types and consumption methods, including catalogue listening rather than only credit purchases. For a title with heavy catalogue play, that is genuinely new income.
- A heavy listener is worth less per title. Someone who plays six books in a month splits one Member Value six ways. Your share of that listener is smaller than a credit purchase would have been.
- List price still matters, as a weight. The split is weighted by a la carte price, so a higher-priced title claims a larger share of the same pool.
Which means no calculator, this one included, can tell you what a given month will pay: that depends on other people’s listening. Use the figures below to compare arrangements — exclusive against non-exclusive, royalty share against paying upfront — which is a comparison the rate alone does settle.

Exclusive is now a wider gap, not a narrower one
Exclusive pays 50% against 30%, so non-exclusive has to sell 1.67 times as many copies elsewhere just to match what exclusivity would have earned on Audible alone. On the legacy model that multiple was 1.6. If you were close to the line before, the new rates push you further toward exclusivity, not away from it.
The case for staying non-exclusive is unchanged and still narrow: you already have an audience on another platform, you sell direct from your own site, or library and education channels matter more to you than retail listening.
Royalty share is still a seven-year decision
If you cannot pay a narrator upfront, ACX lets a producer work for half your royalty for seven years. On the new model your effective rate becomes 25% exclusive or 15% non-exclusive.
Do the break-even before you sign. Production commonly runs a few hundred dollars per finished hour, so a seven-hour book might cost somewhere between $1,500 and $3,000 upfront. At $4.99 a copy handed to the producer, you have given away $2,500 by roughly 500 sales — and then you keep giving it away for the rest of the seven years. A book that sells modestly makes royalty share a bargain. A book that takes off makes it the most expensive money you ever borrowed. The higher new rate raises the amount you hand over, which makes paying upfront more attractive than it was.
List price is still not really yours to set
Audible sets the retail price from finished running time, in bands, so treat the list price in this calculator as the band you expect rather than a number you choose. Under the new model that price also does double duty as the weight in the pool split, which makes the band a little more consequential than it was.
The bounty is gone
ACX historically paid a $25 bounty when your book was a brand-new Audible member’s first purchase. It was retired for newly published exclusive titles in 2022 and does not exist on the new model at all. The toggle in this calculator appears only on the legacy setting, for authors with pre-2022 titles still earning it. If you are publishing now, ignore it entirely.
What to actually do before 31 December
- List your titles and their current model. Anything published since late May is already on the new one.
- Compare the two columns above for your own price band. For most catalogues the new rate is higher and the decision is easy.
- Check how your titles are consumed. A title with heavy catalogue listening gains the most from pooled payment; a title bought outright on credits gains least.
- Do not let the date pass by default. Not enrolling is not a way to stay on the old terms — it removes the title from Audible and ACX.
