Redbubble Earnings Per Sale: Worked Math by Product
Redbubble pays a share of your artist margin after the account fee. Here is the formula, a worked example on assumed base prices, …
All three apps install on Shopify without a plan fee. Printful and Printify sell an optional subscription that discounts base cost, while Prodigi's app guide describes per-order charging only. Whether a subscription pays off depends on monthly order count.
Choosing a print on demand app shopify stores can rely on comes down to three numbers: the monthly plan fee, the base cost of the exact product you plan to sell, and the shipping charge on each order. The "from $X" price on an app listing covers only the first.
As of September 2026, Printful has a free plan and an optional Growth plan at $24.99 a month. Printify has a free plan and a Premium plan at $39 a month or $299 a year. Prodigi's Shopify guide describes charging per order, with no plan fee mentioned.
Sources, all read in September 2026: printful.com/pricing and printful.com/shipping for Printful, printify.com/blog/new-printify-premium for Printify, and Prodigi's own Shopify app user guide (a PDF on prodigi.com). Prodigi's example product prices come from a third-party review. Discounted product prices sit inside each app behind a login, so the figures below combine dated vendor numbers with clearly labelled hypotheticals.
The practical rule: start on the free plan of whichever app fits your products, and upgrade only after your monthly order count passes the break-even number worked out further down.
A fulfillment app takes money from you in four places. Most comparison posts list only the first.
Your Shopify plan, payment processing and any theme or review apps sit outside the fulfillment vendor, but they come out of the same margin. Add them to your own spreadsheet before you judge a product profitable.
Printify raised its monthly Premium price in February 2026, so treat the table as a September 2026 snapshot.
| App | Free option | Paid plan | Discount it buys | Source and confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Printful | Yes, $0 a month | Growth, $24.99 a month; the fee is waived at $12K a year in sales | Up to 33% off product pricing; 25% off sample orders on Growth, 20% on the free plan | printful.com/pricing, read September 2026. The page says "per year" and does not define the window, so check the plan terms before counting on the waiver. |
| Printify | Yes, $0 a month | Premium, $39 a month or $299 a year (about $24.92 a month) | Up to 20% off the full catalog, up to 33% off new products as they launch | printify.com/blog/new-printify-premium, read September 2026. Monthly price rose from $29 on February 17, 2026; annual stayed at $299. |
| Prodigi | App is free to install | None described; charged per order at the point each order is placed by default | Not applicable | Prodigi Shopify app user guide (PDF on prodigi.com). Confirm current terms on the Shopify app listing. |
The words "up to" matter. Printful's 33% and Printify's 20% are ceilings, and the discount on the specific product you sell can be lower. Open the product page inside each app while logged in, because the discounted price shows there.
All three connect through a Shopify app, so an order placed in your store is passed to the vendor and status updates flow back. Prodigi publishes a step-by-step Shopify guide, so its flow is described in detail here.
Prodigi's guide has you install from the Shopify App Store, which creates a Prodigi account automatically. You upload up to five PNG, JPG or TIFF files at once, toggle the products you want, set variants and selling prices, and publish. Each design becomes a collection in Shopify. The app shows a "cost to you" field per variant next to your selling price, so expected profit is visible before you publish.
To let Prodigi update orders, its guide tells you to set Shopify's order processing to not fulfill line items automatically after an order is paid. Production flow can be automatic for standard products or manual for personalized ones. Once an order reaches a Prodigi lab it cannot be cancelled, and card details go through Stripe. Customers get shipping notifications via Shopify, with tracking where the chosen rate provides it.
Printful and Printify each run their own in-app setup, and their help centres are the place to check the current steps. The one structural difference worth knowing in advance is that Printify has you choose a print provider per product, covered below.
Base cost is where most of the real difference lives, and no single price list exists because every product carries its own cost. What a Printify seller pays also depends on which print provider they pick from the catalog. Printify routes orders through a network of providers, so two listings for what looks like the same t-shirt can have different base costs and different shipping.
Printful sets the base price itself and lists it per product, which makes costing simpler. The tradeoff is that you cannot shop between providers for a cheaper blank.
Prodigi's published strength, per the review and its guide, is wall art and paper goods; check the app for its apparel range and shipping. The review at ecommerce-platforms.com, read in September 2026, lists an 8x10 giclee print at $9.50, an A3 framed poster at $25.00, a 16x20 canvas wrap at $32.00 and a greeting card at $2.00, and describes Prodigi as generally cheaper than Printful and close to Printify. Those are one reviewer's figures. Prodigi's own app shows the exact cost per variant, so read your numbers there before pricing anything.
Vendors bill shipping per order and vary it by product, quantity and destination. Printful's shipping page lists, as of September 2026, US standard shipping for shirts at $4.95 for the first item and $2.20 for each additional item. Printify's rate depends on the print provider, and Prodigi's guide says its cost prices exclude shipping and that shipping is configured inside Shopify. Prodigi suggests a rate per country or region that depends on order price, or building shipping into selling prices and offering free shipping.
Price any free-shipping threshold off the vendor's real rate, not a guess. On Printful's shirt rates, a second shirt in the same order adds $2.20 of shipping instead of $4.95, which matters if you offer bundles.
Take a two-shirt US order on Printful's standard shipping. Shipping is $4.95 for the first shirt plus $2.20 for the second, so $7.15 in total. The all-in cost of that order is the base cost of two shirts plus $7.15.
Base cost is the missing input, because Printful shows it only inside the app for a named product. Once you have it, add processing and your plan fee share, as in the break-even section.
Extra placements such as a back print, custom labels and embroidery digitization are charged on top of the base price. Cost the product with every placement before you compare vendors. Printful's sample discount is small in dollars: on a hypothetical $20.00 sample, the free plan's 20% saves $4.00 and Growth's 25% saves $5.00, a $1.00 difference.
A neutral like-for-like base price for one blank is not published outside the apps, so the comparison records what each vendor states publicly. Redo it inside each app for your own product and destination.
| Line | Printful | Printify | Prodigi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who sets the base price | Printful, one price per product | Each print provider you choose | Prodigi, shown as "cost to you" per variant |
| US shipping, first shirt | $4.95 standard flat rate (printful.com/shipping, September 2026) | Varies by provider; shown per listing | Not published on the pages read; check the Prodigi app for any apparel and its shipping |
| US shipping, each extra shirt | $2.20 | Varies by provider | Not published on the pages read; check the Prodigi app |
| US shipping, two-shirt order | $7.15 ($4.95 + $2.20) | Varies by provider | Not published on the pages read |
| Example product price | Read inside the app | Read inside the app | 8x10 giclee print $9.50 (third-party review, September 2026) |
Whether a paid plan changes shipping is not stated on the pages read, so the break-even formula below leaves shipping out. Confirm in each app.
Other apps such as Gelato and Gooten also serve Shopify stores. They were not costed here, so this comparison covers three apps only.
The paid plans only make sense when the money saved on base cost beats the plan fee. The formula is short.
Break-even orders per month = plan fee per month divided by the saving per order. The saving per order is the undiscounted base cost multiplied by your discount rate. Leave shipping out, since the plan discounts described on the vendor pages apply to product pricing.
The $12.00 base cost below is an illustration tied to no real product. The 10% rows are hypothetical, 20% is Printify's stated ceiling and also a hypothetical for Printful, and 33% is the ceiling on Printful's pricing page. Redo the calculation with your own product's figures.
| Plan and assumption | Fee per month | Saving per order | Break-even orders per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printify Premium, monthly, at the stated 20% ceiling on $12.00 | $39.00 | $2.40 | 16.25, so 17 orders |
| Printify Premium, annual, at the stated 20% ceiling on $12.00 | $24.92 ($299 divided by 12) | $2.40 | 10.38, so 11 orders |
| Printful Growth, hypothetical 20% off $12.00 | $24.99 | $2.40 | 10.41, so 11 orders |
| Printful Growth, at the 33% ceiling on $12.00 | $24.99 | $3.96 | 6.31, so 7 orders |
| Printful Growth, hypothetical 10% off $12.00 | $24.99 | $1.20 | 20.83, so 21 orders |
| Printify Premium, annual, hypothetical 10% off $12.00 | $24.92 | $1.20 | 20.77, so 21 orders |
Halving the discount from 20% to 10% roughly doubles the break-even count, from 11 orders to 21. A product with a smaller discount than the headline needs far more orders, so check the discounted price of your actual product before subscribing, not the maximum on the plan page.
Two more points change the answer. The annual Printify plan only wins if you will stay a year, and a store near Printful's $12K sales line should compare the waiver against the discount.
Take a $19.00 shirt with the same hypothetical $12.00 base, shipping charged to the customer, and payment processing at 2.9% plus $0.30 (a common headline card rate; confirm yours). Processing is $19.00 x 0.029 = $0.55, plus $0.30 = $0.85. Profit is $19.00 - $12.00 - $0.85 = $6.15 before the plan fee, Shopify fees and ads.
At 10 orders a month, a $24.99 plan fee costs about $2.50 per order, while a 20% discount saves $2.40. The plan therefore loses about $0.10 an order at 10 orders and breaks even at 11, matching the table.
Printful is the easiest of the three to cost. It lists one base price per product, includes one print placement, and ships from its own network. Its free plan is enough to run a store, and Growth is an add-on rather than a requirement.
Stores that value a single accountable vendor, predictable quality and branded extras such as custom packing inserts and labels.
One vendor means no shopping between providers for a cheaper blank. Read the discounted base price of your exact product in the app and compare it with the same blank elsewhere before you set a retail price.
Printify is a marketplace of print providers rather than a single factory. That is why base cost, quality and shipping speed all vary by provider. Compare the same blank across apps rather than assuming either direction.
The Premium plan looks stronger on the annual price and weaker on the monthly price after the February 2026 change from $29 to $39. Printify's announcement pairs the increase with extras such as mentorship and community access, which may or may not matter to you.
Sellers testing many products cheaply, or stores running mostly apparel where a few dollars of base cost decide the margin.
Switching providers mid-listing changes cost, quality and delivery time. Order a sample from the exact provider you will use, and again if you change.
Provider choice is the real decision inside Printify. For each candidate provider on the same product, write down four things: its rating and review count in the catalog, where it produces, the base price, and its shipping rate to your main destination.
A slightly higher base price from a highly rated provider near your customers can beat a cheaper distant one once shipping and refunds are counted.
With per-order charging by default, a slow month costs you nothing beyond the orders themselves. That suits stores selling giclee prints, framed posters, canvases, cards and photo books, where print quality is the main selling point and volume is unpredictable.
The guide says the network prints from a facility local to the customer where it can, which keeps shipping costs down, and that some products in its full range are only orderable manually through a Prodigi account rather than the app. Sample orders are supported, and the company sells a paper and finish sample pack.
The catch is range and shipping economics. Prodigi's published examples are wall art and paper goods; check its apparel range and shipping in the app if you sell shirts. International orders can carry real freight costs on framed or large items, so price a framed print for a customer in your most likely overseas market before you set a free-shipping banner.
For a store built on wall art, the lack of a fee tier removes a fixed cost you would otherwise have to earn back. For a store built on t-shirts and hoodies, the missing discount tier means you should compare its in-app apparel prices against Printful and Printify before committing.
Run this process for the two apps that fit your product type. It takes about an hour and prevents a month of wrong assumptions.
Write down the exact product, size, print placements and colors. Vague products produce vague costs.
Open the product in each app while logged in and copy the base price, with and without the paid-plan discount if shown.
Add the shipping rate to your two biggest destination countries, for one item and for two items in the same order.
Subtract base cost, shipping if you absorb it, payment processing and your Shopify fee share. What remains is per-order profit.
Buy one physical sample per finished product and check the print, fabric and delivery time before you list it.
Divide the plan fee by the saving per order. If you expect fewer orders than that, stay on the free plan.
For niche choice before any of this, the guide to print on demand niches worth testing covers where to spend those first samples. For the broader model, see the overview of how print on demand works.
The vendor choice is rarely the only problem. The assumptions around it cost just as much margin.
A Shopify store gives you control and your own customer list, and it also gives you the whole job of finding buyers. Marketplaces bring traffic in exchange for a cut and lower control. If you have no audience yet, a marketplace may reach a first sale faster.
Octozia does not connect to Shopify. Its Chrome extensions and dashboard cover Redbubble and TeePublic bulk uploading, research, tag generation and trademark checks, plus KDP puzzle-book page generation. Those tools are trial-gated, with a 3-day trial that requires a card, so they are not free. If your plan is marketplaces rather than your own store, the comparison of Redbubble and TeePublic and the list of seller tools are the better starting points.
There is no single cheapest option, because the cost depends on the product. Printify varies by provider, so it can land above or below Printful for the same blank, while Prodigi has no plan fee and suits art prints. Compare the same blank, discounted base cost plus shipping, and confirm on each vendor's live pages before you decide.
No. Both have a free plan that lets you connect a store and sell. The paid tiers only buy a discount on base cost. Divide the plan fee by your saving per order to find the monthly order count where it pays for itself, and stay free until you pass it.
Prodigi's Shopify guide, read in September 2026, describes installing the app automatically and charging per order by default, with no plan fee mentioned. You pay for the product and, through your own Shopify shipping settings, cover shipping. Confirm on Prodigi's Shopify app listing, since terms can change.
Printify announced that the monthly Premium price moved from $29 to $39 from February 17, 2026, while the annual plan stayed at $299. It tied the change to added benefits, including up to 33% off new products as they launch. Annual billing works out to about $24.92 a month.
Yes. A sample shows print quality, fabric feel, color match and real delivery time from the provider you chose. Printful lists 25% off samples on Growth and 20% on the free plan, which is a $1.00 gap on a $20.00 sample. A single sample costs far less than a refunded first order.
Octozia bulk-uploads to Redbubble and TeePublic and checks phrases for trademark risk; every paid plan starts with a 3-day trial, card required.
