Best Print on Demand for Etsy Artists: Fees and Payouts

Print on Demand

Best Print on Demand Platforms for Artists Selling on Etsy: Fees, Integration and Payout Speed Compared

Printful is the safest default for a small shop of signature prints, Printify with a paid plan wins on thin margins, and Gelato suits buyers abroad. Etsy itself decides when you get paid: expect roughly 14 to 20 days for a new shop, and less once you have a track record.

The Short Answer

The best print on demand platform for Etsy depends on your volume and buyers. Start with Printful if you sell a small number of signature prints and want one accountable producer. Choose Printify if you sell many products, watch margins closely and will order a sample from each print shop. Choose Gelato if many buyers live outside the US.

All three publish listings to your Etsy shop and pull orders back when a buyer checks out. What separates them is who prints the piece, whether a paid plan discounts your base cost, how far the print travels and how much repair work a broken sync creates.

Redbubble and TeePublic are a different model. They are marketplaces with their own storefronts and traffic, not fulfillment services you plug into Etsy.

How the Etsy Connection Actually Works

The loop is the same everywhere. You authorize the provider inside your Etsy account, build a product in the provider's dashboard and publish it as an Etsy listing. When a buyer pays, the order imports to the provider, gets printed and shipped, and tracking goes back to Etsy.

The differences show up when something changes. Here is how each provider documents its connection as of September 2026.

Behavior Printful Printify Gelato
Where listings are created In Printful's Design Maker, then synced to Etsy In the Printify product creator, then published to Etsy In Gelato, or by connecting an existing Etsy listing to a Gelato catalog product
How Etsy items are matched By Etsy's product and variant IDs, not SKUs, so a changed ID breaks the link until you reconnect Mapped at publish; a size added later in Etsy has no mapped variant Mapped when you connect the listing to a catalog product
Order import Orders sync automatically; you choose automatic fulfillment or manual approval Orders import to the dashboard, with approval controls Orders sync to the dashboard; a "Pending approval" status is available if you want to review first
Edits made in Etsy Not documented on Printful's Etsy integration page; run the five-minute test below Titles, descriptions, tags and photos can be edited in Etsy; price and variant changes belong in Printify, and a later Printify re-publish can overwrite Etsy edits Gelato's help center says changes to details, pricing and variants made in Etsy sync back
Shipping and tracking Tracking goes to the customer automatically; out-of-stock status is shown to prevent overselling Tracking is pushed to the Etsy order once the provider ships Products can be assigned to shipping profiles; delivery estimates and tracking appear in the Gelato dashboard

Sources: printful.com/integrations/etsy, help.printify.com, support.gelato.com (Getting Started with Etsy). Help centers change, so run this test on any new connection.

  1. Publish one cheap product from the provider to Etsy.
  2. In Etsy, change the price by $1 and edit one word in the title.
  3. In the provider dashboard, trigger a re-sync or republish, then reload the Etsy listing to see whether your edits survived.
  4. Delete one size in Etsy and place a test order for another size to see whether the order imports or sits unmapped.

The usual failure is an order that never imports. An order only imports when every item in it maps to a provider product, so a size added in Etsy but not in the provider dashboard leaves it stuck.

Etsy has rules about what you are doing

Etsy requires sellers to disclose third parties that help produce their items, and its Creativity Standards expect you to be the creative force behind the work. Printing your own artwork through a provider fits; reselling someone else's art does not. Etsy's Production Partner page has the exact wording (last checked September 2026). This is not legal advice.

Art on Demand Apps: Native Etsy Connection or Manual Orders

Artists searching for an art on demand app usually want either a dashboard that creates and ships prints under their own Etsy shop (Printful, Printify, Gelato) or a fine-art printer that fulfils prints you list yourself.

Prodigi

A UK-based fulfiller focused on wall art, giclee prints, canvases and framed pieces. Its Etsy page says orders route to its print network once your store is connected and products are switched on. You list in Etsy first, then connect Prodigi to fulfil. The integration is described as free, with no minimum orders.

Gooten

A broader catalog with posters and canvas and an Etsy integration built around Etsy's third-party production rules. Plan terms are not on its integrations page, so get a quote for your print sizes before comparing it with the big three.

Fine Art America and Society6

Artist-first marketplaces with their own storefronts. They do not fulfil Etsy orders, so treat them as a second sales channel.

A manual flow means copying each buyer's address and file into the fulfiller's order form. That is fine for a few orders a week and painful beyond that. Whatever you choose, order the exact size, paper and finish you will sell.

Printful, Printify, Gelato and Marketplaces Side by Side

Printful and Printify plan prices below were read from each provider's own pricing page in September 2026.

Option Who prints Etsy link Plan pricing (Sept 2026) Best fit for artists who
Printful Printful and its own network of facilities; one team handles complaints Direct integration; create in Printful and sync to Etsy Free plan at $0. Growth is $24.99/month with up to 33% off product pricing, and is free once you reach $12K/year in sales (printful.com/pricing) Want one accountable partner, consistent output and mockups, and accept a somewhat higher cost per print
Printify Third-party print providers you choose from a catalog; quality varies by shop Direct integration; publish from the Printify dashboard Free plan at $0. Premium is $39/month, or $24.99/month billed yearly, with up to 33% off new products and up to 20% off all products (printify.com/pricing) Want to shop providers for the lowest base cost and will order a sample from the exact provider
Gelato Local partner facilities across many countries, routed to the buyer's region; paper and finish can differ by country Direct integration; create in Gelato or connect existing Etsy listings Gelato+ paid plan alongside a free tier; check the current price on gelato.com/subscription-plans Sell to buyers in several countries and want shorter shipping
Prodigi Prodigi's print network, with a fine-art giclee focus Orders routed after you connect your Etsy store; you create the listings Integration described as free to use; per-print prices vary by product Sell framed prints or giclee reproductions
Redbubble / TeePublic The marketplace itself None; you list on their storefront, not Etsy No plan fee; a platform fee or set margin instead Want passive discovery next to an Etsy shop

Base prices vary by product, provider and destination, so no table can settle which is cheapest for your print. Add the same 8x10 matte poster to a draft product at each provider and note the price shown with US shipping. On any sample, check colour against a calibrated screen, crop against the mockup, fine detail at your largest size, and whether the piece arrives flat.

The Fee Stack: What Etsy Takes Plus What the Provider Charges

An Etsy print sale carries two cost layers. Etsy charges for the listing and the sale. The provider charges for the physical product and shipping, plus an optional monthly plan.

Etsy's published US structure as of September 2026 is a $0.20 listing fee, renewing every four months and again when a sale renews a multi-quantity listing, and a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus any shipping charged to the buyer. Payment processing for US sellers is 3% plus $0.25 per order. Rates differ by country, so the Fees and Payments Policy at etsy.com/legal/fees is the source for your own shop.

Worked example: one 8x10 matte art print, free shipping

Assume a $30 unframed 8x10 matte print with shipping built into the price. Provider cost (base price plus US shipping) is an example figure of $12.00; replace it with the number from your provider's catalog. The example is US-only, before sales tax and before ads.

Line Calculation Amount
Sale price paid by buyer Item price with free shipping $30.00
Etsy transaction fee 6.5% of $30.00 $1.95
Etsy payment processing 3% of $30.00 ($0.90) plus $0.25 $1.15
Etsy listing fee One listing charge $0.20
Provider cost Example base plus shipping $12.00 (example)
Profit before ads and taxes $30.00 minus $1.95, $1.15, $0.20 and $12.00 $14.70

Etsy fees total $3.30 on that sale. Real orders net a little less because currency conversion costs extra on foreign sales.

If the sale comes through Etsy's Offsite Ads, Etsy charges an advertising fee that has been 12% or 15% of the order total depending on shop revenue. At 15% that is $4.50, and profit drops to $10.20. With a provider cost anywhere from $9.00 to $14.00, profit before ads runs from $17.70 down to $12.70.

When a paid plan pays for itself

A discount plan helps only when monthly volume clears the break-even. Printify's page states up to 20% off all products on Premium, so take a product with a $10.00 base price: the discount saves $2.00 per order, assuming it applies to the base price only.

At Premium's yearly rate of $24.99 a month, 24.99 divided by 2.00 is about 12.5, so you need 13 orders a month to come out ahead. At the $39 monthly rate, 39 divided by 2.00 is 19.5, so you need 20. Printful's Growth plan is also $24.99 a month, so the same arithmetic holds if your Printful saving is also $2.00. Artists who sell a handful of prints a month are better off on a free tier.

Payout Speed: Two Clocks, Not One

Artists asking about payout speed usually mean when Etsy sends money to their bank. There is a second clock: when the provider charges you for the print. The two rarely line up in your favour for a new shop.

Clock What Etsy or the provider states (Sept 2026) What it means for cash flow
Etsy deposit, new shop Funds generally become available for deposit about 14 to 20 days after a sale, and longer depending on shop standing. Deposits go out weekly, on Mondays, by default You front the print cost for two to three weeks
Etsy deposit, established shop Eligibility is quicker once a shop has a sales and shipping record; Etsy lets you pick a deposit schedule in Shop Manager The gap shrinks with history
Payment account reserve New sellers may have a percentage of each physical-item sale held on a rolling basis for up to 45 days. Etsy's own example is 30%. Adding tracking that shows the parcel in transit can release held funds earlier, and most reserves lift within 90 days Part of your revenue arrives late, even after the main hold ends
Bank arrival Your bank adds processing time after Etsy marks a deposit as sent, commonly a few business days Add a buffer on top of Etsy's date
Provider charge Providers bill your card or balance when an order is approved for production, not when Etsy pays you Cost leaves your account before revenue arrives

Cash-flow example for a new shop

Say you sell 10 of the $30 prints above in week one. The provider bills $120.00 ($12.00 each) within days. Etsy's fees take $33.00, leaving $147.00 of profit on paper, and $267.00 of the $300.00 is what Etsy owes you after fees.

Etsy describes the reserve as a percentage of each sale, so this example applies 30% to the $300.00 gross. That holds $90.00 for up to 45 days, and the remaining $177.00 (267 minus 90) becomes depositable around day 14 to 20. Etsy does not publish whether fees are netted before the percentage is taken, so treat $90.00 as the cautious figure.

Until the deposit lands you are $120.00 out of pocket, and the held share arrives sooner if tracking lands on each order. A card with room on it and a small cash buffer matter more than a 2% difference in base cost.

Connecting a Provider to Your Etsy Shop

The sequence is the same for all of them. Menu names differ, so follow the labels in the provider's dashboard.

1

Order a sample first

Buy one print of your best-selling artwork directly from the provider to your own address. Inspect colour, crop and packaging before listing anything.

2

Authorize the Etsy connection

In the dashboard, open the stores or integrations section, choose Etsy, and approve access in the Etsy window that opens.

3

Build the product in the provider dashboard

Pick the product, upload your file at full resolution, set placement, choose sizes, and write a keyword-aware title, description and tags.

4

Set your price from the cost

Add the provider cost, Etsy's percentages and the fixed $0.25 and $0.20 items, then choose a price that leaves your target profit.

5

Publish and verify the mapping

Open the live Etsy listing and confirm every size is linked to a provider variant. Then place a real test order and watch it import.

6

Run the edit test

Use the five-minute test above to find out whether a re-sync overwrites Etsy edits, and make your edits where the test shows it is safe.

For title and tag research, read print on demand keyword research, and screen your phrases with how to avoid trademark violations in print on demand before publishing.

Where Redbubble and TeePublic Fit Beside an Etsy Shop

Marketplaces solve a problem connected providers do not: traffic. A new Etsy shop competes for search placement from zero, while Redbubble and TeePublic already receive visitors searching for designs. The trade-off is control, because prices, mockups, customer service and branding are theirs and margins are thinner.

Both cap uploads. Redbubble's community guidelines (checked September 2026) allow up to 30 works per day across all of your accounts. TeePublic uses a rolling 24-hour cap of 25 uploads for Pending and Apprentice accounts and 50 for Artisan accounts.

A common split is a connected provider on Etsy for limited prints you want to price and present yourself, and a marketplace for stickers and apparel. For detail, read Redbubble versus TeePublic, how to sell on Redbubble and how to sell on TeePublic.

Which Platform Suits Which Artist

  • Small number of signature prints, consistency matters: Printful, paying the higher base cost for predictable output.
  • Many products, margin-sensitive: Printify with Premium can win once you clear the 13-order break-even worked out above, provided you sample each print shop.
  • Buyers in the UK, EU, Canada or Australia: Gelato's local production can cut delivery time, so confirm your products are supported in those regions.
  • Framed or giclee reproductions: Prodigi, accepting that you create the Etsy listings yourself.
  • Traffic without building it: add a marketplace account alongside Etsy rather than instead of it.

Switching later means rebuilding listings, so a two-week sample test up front is cheaper than a migration.

FAQ

Does Printful or Printify work better with Etsy?

Both connect directly. Printful controls its own production, which tends to give steadier output. Printify lets you choose among print providers, which can lower base cost but adds variation. Printify's own guidance warns that a re-publish can overwrite edits made in Etsy, so keep price and variant changes in its dashboard.

What is the best art on demand app for Etsy?

For most artists, a connected dashboard: Printful, Printify or Gelato. Prodigi suits giclee and framed work and connects to Etsy for fulfilment, but you create the listings yourself. Gooten also lists an Etsy integration; get a quote for your print sizes first.

Do I have to tell Etsy that I use a print on demand company?

Yes. Etsy requires sellers to disclose third parties that help produce items, including print providers, and to describe how items are made. Etsy's Creativity Standards and Production Partner pages carry the current wording (last checked September 2026). This is not legal advice.

How long until Etsy pays me for a print on demand sale?

For a new shop, funds generally become depositable about 14 to 20 days after a sale, and deposits default to weekly on Mondays. A payment account reserve can hold a share for up to 45 days. Add a few bank days on top. Established shops wait less.

Is a paid print on demand plan worth it for a small Etsy art shop?

Usually not at low volume. Divide the monthly plan price by your saving per order to get the break-even order count, as in the example above. Stay on the free tier until order count is steady, then recalculate with your own discount.

What should I check first when an Etsy order does not reach my print provider?

Confirm that every variant in the order is linked to a provider product. Printful matches by Etsy's product and variant IDs, which breaks the link if Etsy changes them until you reconnect the product. Then confirm your order approval setting is not holding the order for manual approval.

If you also sell on Redbubble, upload in bulk

The Octozia Redbubble Bulk Uploader applies shared titles, descriptions and tags across many designs at once, with a 3-day trial (card required, cancel anytime before it ends).
